Barack Obama visited Downing Street for a surprise meeting with Rishi Sunak. The former US president waved at reporters before going inside.
Downing Street said it was just a friendly visit during Obama’s trip to London. The meeting happened at 3 pm. It was informal and not planned before.
Obama and Sunak:
President Obama met with Prime Minister Sunak at No 10. They talked about the Obama Foundation’s work. Obama left after an hour. They were happy to meet.
The old president said “I want to” to the media. He got in a car with Jane D Hartley, the US ambassador. It happened just after 4 pm. He made the Barack Obama Foundation in 2014. He last went to Downing Street eight years ago. It was in 2016. He met with David Cameron at Number 10. They talked about Brexit. He said the UK would be at the “back of the line” for trade deals.
Obama and Sunak talked at the Foreign Office. Obama wants Britain to have more influence, even in Europe. Sunak is trying to stay as prime minister. Some people want to replace him with Mordaunt. Sunak’s party worries about losing the next election. They hope Mordaunt can help. They had a news conference together. Sunak says he’s confident about the future.
