The New York Yankees beat the Houston Astros 5-4 on Opening Day. They were behind at first. Nestor Cortes struggled, letting in three runs in the first inning. Things didn’t improve in the next inning.
Cortes gave up a solo home run to Kyle Tucker. But the Yankees fought back. Juan Soto, a new player, got an RBI single in the fifth inning.
Yankees Take Lead in Exciting Game
In the sixth inning, Cabrera hit a solo home run, tying the game at 4-4. Then, in the seventh, Verdugo’s sacrifice fly gave the Yankees the lead.
The bullpen, led by Loaisiga and Hamilton, shut down the opposition for three more innings. The Yankees kept the lead until the end of the game.
Things got tense in the bottom of the ninth with Clay Holmes pitching. He gave up a single to Mauricio Dubon, then another hit to the Astros. With runners on first and second, Tucker hit a single to right field. This set up the most thrilling moment of the game.
Juan Soto caught the ball in right field. He threw it perfectly to home plate. His throw was strong. It beat Dubon to the plate. This set up a close play with Yankee catcher Jose Trevino. Trevino tagged Dubon out.
The Astros didn’t agree and challenged the call. But the umpires kept the original call.
